How exciting to welcome Reba McEntire here at The Essex Inn Bed and Breakfast in Tappahannock, VA.! She and her assistants, Carolyn and Neil stayed here whilst they were shooting locally for an up-coming TV show called "Who do you think you are". Evidently, Miss McEntire must have family roots here along the Rappahannock River in Tappahannock, VA. Our three honored guests couldn't have been more enthusiastic about The Essex Inn and even commented on our comfortable beds. Miss McEntire and her companions had the run of the Inn and made themselves at -home here relaxing by the fire, playing cards and enjoying a quiet evening after dinner at a local restaurant. Miss McEntire is just like she should be: warm, engaging, perky, attractive, down- to-earth, out-going and delightful. In the morning after breakfast and a make-up session, the group went over to our Essex County Courthouse just a few blocks away in historic Tappahannock to begin the TV shoot. Hope they will be back to discover more of this great region of Virginia.

Things to do when visiting The Essex Inn in Tappahannock, VA

How does a Rivah Cruise sound to you? Plying the waters of the great Rappahannock River, one can enjoy a bit of history, see rare bald eagles and ospreys, watersports and lots of interesting and beautiful scenery along the way. The Captain Thomas boat is docked just a short drive from The Essex Inn in Tappahannock. From May through October it operates and departs at 10:00 AM daily except on Mondays. The tour is narrated while you enjoy the 20 mile cruise up river to the popular Ingleside Winery, where you will disembark for a tour and wine tasting and lunch. The lunch is an additional $12.00 per person. You may also bring your own picnic.
The next stop is at Wheatland, the last remaining steamboat wharf on the Rappahannock. For a small fee one can visit and tour the house, gardens, wharf and museum of river history.

We are getting all set for another holiday at the Essex Inn. The garden is looking fabulous, the hammock is waiting to be swung, the bunting is up on the porches, the croquet set is ready to be played on the front lawn, the iced tea and iced coffee will be in the pitchers. A big fireworks display is being prepared over on the Northern Neck. That is the next peninsula over from us across the Rappahannock River from Tappahannock.

RIVAHFEST , The annual festival to celebrate life on the Rivah here in Tappahannock, VA was a huge success! Thousands of visitors to Tappahannock enjoyed wonderful food, music, vendors, arts, crafts and acitivities for the whole family. The Essex Bed and Breakfast Inn is located right on Water Lane, smack in the middle of all the activity and fun. Many people use our lawn to sit and watch all the festivities. The Essex Inn also is part of the walking tour offered that day with 5 historic Tappahannock buildings open to view to the public. The tour is especially nice for us because we can showcase the inn to people who have not yet visited with us and let them know of our unique history and our beautiful property. If you haven't experienced RIVAHFEST yet, make plans to join us at The Essex Bed and Breakfast Inn next year.

HISTORIC GARDEN WEEK OF VIRGINIA update...
The weather here in Tappahannock has been lovely this last week, finally affording us the opportunity to do some planting, pruning, digging, hauling and getting ready for the big day, April 22. The garden is already giving us some beautiful tulips and hyacinths and other bulbs that have naturalized all over the garden.
This being our first spring here, it is a joy to see the garden unfolding before us.
We have a few rooms left for the Garden show weekend, so give us a call. We would love to see you here.

Historic Garden Week

"Historic Garden Week in Virginia" is presented locally by the Essex County Garden Club of the Middle Peninsula. Tappahannock's Open House and Garden Tour is on Friday, April 22nd, 2011 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. We are proud to have been invited to participate in this state-wide and prestigious event. Attendees will be invited to explore both our gardens as well as the interior of our beautiful inn. Only the four suites in our "Quarters" will be available to book for this special event as the main house will be decked out with georgous floral arrangements and made ready for the tour. We will offer a glorified continental breakfast for our guests that morning in the garden (weather permitting).

There are five other homes in Tappahannock that are also on the tour so, give us a call or go on-line and book one of the few remaining suites for a truly memorable visit to Tappahannock and The Essex Inn.

Virginia Bed and Breakfast Hosts Christmas Tea
